Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford was first fascinated by acting when she was a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford then applied for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her fellow students. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime she already had made her TV debut on the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition as a stand-up comedian that was added to her repertoire in 1996.
